XMM–Newton observations of the black hole X-ray transient XTE J1650–500 in quiescence
We report the result of an XMM–Newton observation of the black hole X-ray transient XTE J1650–500 in quiescence. The source was not detected, and we set upper limits on the 0.5–10 keV luminosity of 0.9–1.0 × 1031 erg s−1 (for a newly derived distance of 2.6 kpc). These limits are in line with the quiescent luminosities of black hole X-ray binaries with similar orbital periods (∼7–8 h).
متن کاملA second black hole candidate in a M31 globular cluster is identified with XMM–Newton
We use arguments developed in previous work to identify a second black hole candidate associated with a M31 globular cluster, Bo 144, on the basis of X-ray spectral and timing properties. The 2002 XMM-Newton observation of the associated X-ray source (hereafter XBo 144) revealed behaviour that is common to all low-mass X-ray binaries (LMXBs) in the low-hard state. Studies have shown that neutro...
متن کاملX-ray Spectrum of the Black Hole Candidate X1755-338
We report the rst detection of a hard power-law tail in the X-ray spectrum of the black hole candidate (BHC) binary X1755-338, which was observed in 1989 March-September during the TTM Galactic Centre survey. In addition, an ultrasoft thermal component with a temperature of 1:1 1:4 keV was also detected. We demonstrate that the soft and hard X-ray components of X1755-338 vary independently, as ...
متن کاملThe Spectrum of the Black Hole X-ray Nova V404 Cygni in Quiescence as Measured by Xmm-newton
We present XMM-Newton observations of the black hole X-ray nova V404 Cyg in quiescence. Its quiescent spectrum can be best fitted by a simple power-law with slope Γ ∼ 2. The spectra are consistent with that expected for the advection-dominated accretion flow (ADAF). V404 Cyg was roughly equal in luminosity compared to the previous observation of Chandra. We see variability of a factor of 4 duri...
متن کاملDiscovery of a 0 . 08 Hz QPO in the power spectrum of black hole candidate XTE J 1118 + 480
We found a strong QPO feature at 0.085 ± 0.002 Hz in the power spectrum of an X-ray transient XTE J1118+480. The QPO was detected in PCA/RXTE data with an amplitude close to 10% rms, and width 0.034 ± 0.006 Hz. The shape of the power spectrum is typical for black hole candidates: almost flat at frequencies lower than 0.03 Hz, roughly a power law with slope ∼1.2 from 0.03 to 1 Hz, with steepenin...
